Abstract

This special issue is a collection of selected papers presented at the 8th International Conference on Optimization: Techniques and Applications (ICOTA 8), which was held on December 10–13, 2010 in Shanghai, China. ICOTA is an official conference series of POP (The Pacific Optimization Research Activity Group) and ICOTA 8 was organized by the School of Management, Fudan University. The purpose of this tri-annual conference is to provide a forum for international researchers and practitioners to exchange their research findings in the developments of solution techniques and applications for optimization. Over two hundred papers were presented at ICOTA 8. The twelve papers published in this special issue cover a wide range of topics in optimization techniques and their applications, as outlined below. In the first paper, Ang, Fukushima, Meng, Noda and Sun examine a delivery frequency competition game of n competing suppliers and one manufacturer. A generalized Nash equilibrium and a special case of equal selling price are discussed. The second paper by Zhang and Teo is concerned with the convergence analysis of power penalty method to pricing American options on discount bond. The solvability and convergence properties of the monotonic penalty method are established. The third paper by Li, Li, Shu and Xu present a cost-sharing scheme for the concave facility location game, which is cross-monotonic and competitive, and recovers 1/3 fraction of the total cost.
