Abstract
In the present study, 129 gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) individuals retrospectively reported family satisfaction at three points: prior to disclosing their sexual orientation, after disclosure, and currently. Family satisfaction decreases immediately following disclosure but eventually returns to prior levels. Family factors that contributed to family satisfaction at each time point were examined. Prior to coming out, family flexibility, communication, and cohesion were significant predictors of family satisfaction. Immediately after coming out, family flexibility and communication were significant predictors of family satisfaction. Family satisfaction immediately after coming out, enmeshment, and disengagement were significant predictors of current family satisfaction.
