Abstract

A computer-simulation model (using car-following theory, a constrained random input, and regression equations) was developed to predict the fuel consumption of petrol and diesel vehicles for a free-flow situation. The simulation model provides data for the formation of regression equations relating fuel consumption to vehicle speed for each body type and duty cycle. The vehicles chosen for simulation are a VW Golf 1500 LD diesel and a Golf 1100 L petrol vehicle, which have closely similar road performance over a range of traffic conditions. The model was designed to find the fuel consumption of petrol and diesel vehicles for freely-flowing traffic on the road and to sum the fuel consumption for all vehicles in the system. In addition, the model was used to examine the contribution made to fuel consumption by factors such as vehicle speed and passenger load.
