Abstract
The American Diabetes Association recommends that women with diabetes of childbearing age receive preconception counseling starting at puberty [1]. Although preconception counseling is built into the care for adolescent females at many pediatric diabetes centers, there are few standardized, diabetes-specific programs. Further, little is known about the efficacy of existing programs as well as their cost-effectiveness. This is critical public health information to have to reduce the risk of complications associated with pregnancy for females with diabetes. Considering this gap in the scientific literature and preconception counseling’s public health relevance, a team of investigators developed and tested a program for adolescent females with type 1 diabetes.
