Abstract

Adsorption equilibrium pressures p eq of thick Kr layers physisorbed on graphite were measured in the range very close to the saturation vapour pressure p 0 of bulk Kr, using a new measuring system having two cells kept precisely at the same temperature. T. Kr gas was adsorbed on exfoliated graphite stored in one of the cells, while bulk solid or liquid Kr was being formed on the wall of the other cell. The relative pressure difference, (p 0 − p eq ) / p 0′ was determined to 0.001 by direct comparison of p 0 and p eq . It was found that (1) p eq does not reach p 0 at the thickness of about 40 atomic layers for 90 T x in the Frenkel-Halsey-Hill relation RT ln( p eq / p 0 ) ∝ n −x , where n is the amount of adsorption, is almost equal to 3/2 for n up to 36 mmol (∼36 atomic layers) and for 85 T
