Abstract

The use of anaphoric pronominalizations without linguistic antecedents is investigated. The absence of co-referring full forms is accounted for in certain instances by the contextual salience of the referent for both speaker and nearer. Other instances of the use of pro-nominals can only be accounted for in terms of egocentric control by the speaker. An explanation for the phenomenon is presented in terms of what speakers treat as ‘given’ elements in spoken discourse.
