Abstract
In the age of modernization of education, introduction of Unified State Examination in foreign languages, increased po-pularity of international exams such as FCE, CAE, TOEFL, etc. one should give attention to the development of oral and writing skills. Students need writing skills to participate in internatio-nal conferences, academic exchange programs, etc. This paper researches essay peculiarities, its structure, criteria; offers exercises to develop foreign language writing skills through the example of essay. Methodology: theoretical analysis of psychological, pedagogical and methodical literature, personal work experience analysis. Practical implications: foreign language teaching.
