Abstract
Summary The economic downturn triggered by the crisis on the American financial market has caused a surge of unemployment, first in the USA and then in other OECD countries. Short time work has become a major instrument of labour market toolkit, enabling to contain this negative phenomenon. It stipulates a temporary reduction of staff work time. Unfavourable situation on labour markets has encouraged many governments to modify the principles of this instrument in order to effectively reduce un-employment. It is hard to assess precisely the impact of short time work on unemployment rate, nevertheless, available analyses suggest this impact has been significant. It has helped fight unemployment, particularly in countries with a long tradition of short time work.
