Abstract

It aims to discuss the intrinsic relations between gender and manga, in order to grasp the contemporary changes on the profile of shoujo and shounen manga readers. To that end, we explore the history of manga as a narrative, as well as a representation of feminine and masculine patterns; we discuss the characteristics of shoujo and shounen subgenres; as well as analyze the most popular manga among readers whose gender opposes the demographic of said work, while substantiating this study through Hans Robert Jauss’s Aesthetic of Reception Theory (1994 [1970]), as a means to problematize the contemporary turns in Japanese comics.
