Abstract

Introduction The increasing incidence of oral cancer is a growing public health problem worldwide. The oral cavity provides easy viewing of any change occurring in their structures. Objectives To examine changes in the mouths of individuals in the population, seek and identify the presence of lesions, minor or not, and raise awareness about the risks of oral cancer. Methods 21,018 patients over 30 years of age in 98 municipalities in Parana were examined between 1989 and 2011, being fragmented 5 in 5 years. A questionnaire was wondering about education, family income, often the dentist, prevention of oral cancer, alcoholism, smoking and consumption of mate. Data such as sex and race. On clinical examination were observed: complete dentures, oral hygiene and oral lesions, and information about oral cancer. Results In the period from 1998 to 2003 were evaluated 10,938 individuals, of which 63.05% women and 36.95% men, 94.65% were Caucasians and the family income was less than twice the minimum wage in 2160 individuals (74.4%). In regard to education, 1586 (59.95%) had finished high school, 367 (13.25%) high school, 107 (4.45%) college and 689 (23.25%) illiterate. Referred 1926 (16.01%) individuals with suspicious lesions, including 556 (26.7%) were inflammatory; 991 (53.4%) traumatic, 212 (23.55%) leukoplakic and 87 (5.7% ) red. The frequency of visits to the dentist varied: 718 (24.75%) were not in pain, 667 (24%) were not going to the dentist, 642 (25.95%) were edentulous, 536 (17.9%) were once per annum to the dentist and 207 (7.15%), once every 2 years. Other data: 56.5% had poor oral hygiene, 67.5% were using denture, 14.75% alcohol, 21.65% and 37.8% tobacco consumption mate. About prevention, 477 (20.35%) have never heard of prevention of oral cancer, 406 (14.7%) did prevent oral cancer and 1726 (65.05%) never did. Conclusion Campaigns prevention of oral cancer reach underprivileged social classes.
