Abstract

Introduction Great efforts have been made to make the prevention and diagnosis of oral cancer are performed early. Objectives To examine the oral cavity of individuals in the population and educate them about the risks of oral cancer. Methods 21,018 patients older than 30 years old, of 98 municipalities in the state of Parana, were examined between 1989 and 2011, being fragmented into groups of 5 in 5 years. This work presents the group evaluated between 1989 and 1993. A questionnaire was wondering about education, family income, often the dentist, prevention of oral cancer, alcoholism, smoking and consumption of mate, and data such as gender and ethnicity. On clinical examination were observed: complete dentures, oral hygiene and oral lesions. Results We evaluated 1698 individuals and 68.2% women and 31.8% men; Caucasians totaled 91.2% and 81.7% earned less finished high school, 28 (9.2%) high school, 13 (4.3% ) college and 76 (24.9%) were illiterate. We found 305 (18%) lesions in patients between 31 and 60 years (71.5%), which were subsequently forwarded. Of these injuries, 42 (13.8%) were inflammatory; 143 (46.9%) traumatic, 118 (38.75%) and other leukoplakic 02 (0.7%). Asked about visits to the dentist, 81 (26.6%) only go when they have pain, 118 (38.6%) do not go to the dentist, 38 (12.5%) were edentulous, 45 (14.8%) 1 go to the dentist once a year, 23 (7.5%) once every 2 years. They wore denture 226 (92.25%). The percentages refer to habits: 12.75% alcohol, 27.5% tobacco and 33.1% consumption mate. The prevention of oral lesions was approached and 66 people (21.6%) had never heard of prevention of oral cancer, 88 (28.9%) had already made prevention and 151 (49.5%) had never been examined. Conclusion Campaigns cancer prevention assist healthcare professionals in preventing neoplastic lesions and identification of precancerous.
