Abstract

A shortcoming of the dynamic wireless charging (DWC) systems for electric vehicles (EVs) is the partial utilization of their power capabilities because the profile of the power transferred to the pickup stays below the maximum during the EV motion. Indeed, it goes from zero when the pickup is not coupled with a track coil to a maximum when they are aligned. An approach adopted to boost the profile consists in connecting a multi-element compensation network (CN) to both track coils and pickup. This paper deals with a CN made of two reactive elements connected to the track coils and a resonant capacitor connected in series to the pickup. The objective is to investigate the potentials of such a simple CN arrangement in boosting the power profile while keeping limited the supply voltage of the DWC system. The analytical procedure elaborated to size the two elements is explained and applied to a study case. Boosting in the power profile of the resultant DWC system is computed by numerical analysis. The results are discussed and compared against the ones of a DWC system with a single-element CN.
