Abstract
Ikea is working on an idea to bring electricity to the estimated 1.1 billion people on earth who currently have no grid access. The “SolarVille” concept envisions solar-powered microgrids in which users buy energy from each other using blockchain. However, a different approach that brings affordable standalone solar systems to individual households without the need for investment in a microgrid has already attracted considerable venture capital and is enjoying rapid take-up in some countries. Experts are watching to see which model has the best chance for success.
