Abstract
The primary voltage regulation for synchronous generator control is addressed in the context of modern interconnected power system problems. Voltage regulation in the synchronous generators is maintained by the Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVR). A brief review of the role of AVR in the overall power system problem is given. The use of a multi-loop AVR control structure involving advanced optimal control theories is also presented to improve the performance of generator terminal voltage control in primary regulation and system stability
