Abstract

SYNOPSISTHIS PAPER EXAMINES the use of water in the generation of electricity in England and Wales and describes the measures taken to reduce the environmental consequences of this use. Potential effects on water quality that may arise indirectly from activities other than water use are also discussed. The first part of the paper deals with a range of topics that are generally common to the generation of electricity by either of the principal means ‐ fossil fuel (coal and oil) combustion and nuclear energy. The second part of the paper deals specifically with the discharge of radioactive materials that may affect the aquatic environment.
