Abstract
The following study was undertaken to explore how low-income communities/individuals understand poverty and the reasons behind their economic self-identification. The present study examines the perceptions, requirements, and needs of the lower-income demographic ofKarachi but in their own words rather than allowing professionals to speak for them. Previous studies have established that improved transport and access to better housing, health, and education facilities are priorities determining level of poverty. But what stops the poor from being able to achieve such a standard of living in their daily lives. As part of the study, the authors conducted interviews of professionals and urban planners and contrasted their views regarding poverty with those of communities and individuals whose lived reality is in the midst of varying degrees of poverty.
