Abstract

The role that Saint Francis of Assisi plays in relation to the problems raised in the two recent encyclicals of Pope Francis (Laudato si’ and Fratelli tutti) can only be fully understood if one is aware of the path of spiritual perfection followed by the saint. This path, starting with the choice of poverty and the greatest humbleness, can finally culminate and be fully realised in the new look at nature, which breaks with a centuriesold Christian tradition mostly oriented towards its disdain, to contemptus mundi and to fleeing from it.
