Abstract

The Dialogi and the Registrum epistularum of Gregory the Great (590-604) constitute two precious texts on the pontiff’s approach to the theme of poverty. Through these two fundamental sources it is possible, on the one hand, to observe in the hagiographic collection the miracles performed by the saints, who, thanks to God’s favour, were able to remedy the various situations of need in which the poor, especially in rural areas, found themselves; on the other hand, it is possible to see in the collection of letters Gregory’s constant and punctual attention to ensuring that the Church’s resources were correctly used in favour of the pauperes. A twofold point of view, therefore, on the question of paupertas which, dealt with from the point of view of the thaumaturgical- spiritual and from the point of view of the administrative management of the patrimonium of the Church of Rome, remained in Gregory’s conception a means for the richest to take care of the neediest and, through their charity, to deserve the reward of the Kingdom of Heaven.
