Abstract

Toward a definition of coilaging : composition and reception in American poetry. In an attempt to define the modalities of collage in poetry, in relation to the visual arts and above all to the Modernist poem, this paper reconsiders Ezra Pound's Cantos under the sign of compacting, questions the reduction of collage to mere practices of decomposition and recomposition, and opens the debate to the part played by procedures in the composition and reception of poems : as centred on textual generation as well as on the products of creation, Gertrude Stein’s text emerges as seminal in the construction of language poetry and Jackson Mac Low’s procedural poetry allows for a redefinition of collage and more generally of the poetic in terms of architecture.
