Abstract

The calcium selective liquid ion-exchange electrode has been applied to the determination of stability constants of calcium ion with tetraphosphate, trimetaphosphate and tetrametaphosphate ions. The values 10 5·45 and 10 3·35 obtained for the stepwise addition of two calcium ions to a tetraphosphate ion with the ionic strength adjusted to unity with (CH 3) 4NCl, T = 25°C are in good agreement with those obtained by pH titrations. The formation constant for the association of one protonated ligand, HP 4O 13 5−, with Ca 2+ is 10 3·31. Under similar conditions the formation constant for the association of one Ca 2+ ion with one trimetaphosphate ion is 10 1·64; with one tetrametaphosphate ion it is 10 3·1.
