Abstract

Until the middle of the 19th century, only natural colorants were used for textile coloration. After the advent of synthetic dyes, the use of natural colorants declined drastically and today only a small fraction of textiles that are commercially traded are colored with the natural dyes. However, there is an enormous potential for increasing the use of natural colorants for developing sustainable textiles. The natural dyes can be sourced from plants, animals/insects, and minerals. This article gives an overview of the classifications and examples of natural dyes, a brief synopsis of current research and development in textile coloration, and challenges for commercialization with corresponding possible solutions.
