Abstract

A class of potentials is given which illustrate the relationship between symmetry and the onset of irregular motion in two-dimensional problems. Homogeneous functions are used so that the principle of mechanical similarity ensures energy independent behaviour, in contrast to the classic Hénon-Heiles case.
