Abstract

This work reports on the thermographic characteristics and their potential for use, in fiber optic temperature sensors, of a range of neodymium-doped materials. Their comparative value for low-cost, simple sensors is discussed, using both crystalline materials in the bulk form and a specimen of highly doped, multimode neodymium fiber. The effects of annealing of the bulk materials are discussed in light of their suitability for such sensor applications.
