Abstract

In advanced settlement and urban planning due consideration must be given to the regional and local Potential Air Pollution Climates (PAPC). These climates are determined by various factors, including synoptic climatology, mesoscale and local flow patterns, the structure and dynamics of the local Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL), and urban microclimatology. In the present study some of the main PAPC features were analyzed as they affect the major coastal urban areas in Israel (i.e., Tel Aviv, Haifa, Hadera and Ashdod). The deficiencies of the present location of some of the industrial zones and major pollution sources (e.g., power plants) with respect to the various PAPC features are discussed. Some conclusions regarding optimal siting strategies are drawn.
