Abstract
Katja, et al ., 2009. The potential of avocado (Persea Americana Mill) leaf as source of natural antioxidant. Avocado leaf ( Persea Americana Mill) is one of folk medicine source to cure several kind of illness. The aim of this research is to investigate avocado leaf as a potential source of nature phenolic for use as antioxidants. Avocado leaf was extracted with ethanol and hydrolyzed with acid. Phenolic total content of avocado leaf extract was determined Folin-Ciocalteu method. The antioxidative activities of extract were determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging and reducing power assay. Total phenolic content of ethanol extract of avocado leaf (EEDA) and ethanol hydrolysis of avocado leaf (EHDA) were 161.43 and 87.79 ppm, respectively, which was expressed as gallic acid equivalent. Test of DPPH showed that EEDA possesed ability highest as free radical scavenging than EHDA. The results also indicated that concentration of both the extracts increased with increasing antioxidant activity. The EEDA at concentration 200 ppm showed reducing power was strongest than BHT α-tocopherol as positive control. The results obtained in the present study indicated avocado leaf extracts are a potential source of natural antioxidant.
