Abstract

Subgroups of patients are at risk of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) after a cardiac event, such as a myocardial infarction [1]. Treatment with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) may also qualify as a potential traumatic stressor, as it may serve as a constant reminder of the underlying cardiac condition, and is able to deliver an uncontrollable shock to terminate life-threatening ventricular tachyarrhythmias [2]. Two previous studies have reported severe PTSD symptoms in 13–25% of the ICD patients [3,4].
