Abstract

The article presents a comprehensive description of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and is divided into the following sections: (1) general description, (2) Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) conceptions, (3) PTSD criteria, (4) prevalence, (5) morbidity, (6) etiology, (7) treatment, and (8) a summary. As the only mental illness traceable to a clear cause of a precipitating traumatic event, the evolution of PTSD as a disorder in the DSM is described. However, experiencing a traumatic event alone does not necessitate a diagnosis of PTSD, since the vast majority of those who report traumas do not go on to develop PTSD. Finally, a number of PTSD treatments are explored, including exposure therapy, stress inoculation training, cognitive therapy, and eye movement desensitization and reprogramming.
