Abstract
India has a 16% share of global vegetable production. Leguminous vegetable crops have an important role in food and nutrition and maintain health of soil. Economically important leguminous vegetables are broad bean, cowpea, cluster bean, French bean, Indian bean, pea and winged bean, which are cultivated worldwide. Postharvest loss in vegetables is reported up to 30−40% due to their perishable nature and short shelf life. Therefore, special skills are required to prevent postharvest losses in vegetables from plant diseases/pathogens and provide extended shelf life. Anthracnose, white rot and soft rot are important postharvest diseases of leguminous vegetable crops. Fungistatic fungicides are commonly applied for postharvest disease control. Bio control of postharvest diseases of leguminous vegetable crops has great potential under storage conditions and biological products/biopesticides are available in the market. The biopesticides Aspire™, Bio-Save™ and YieldPlus™ are involved to combine products with a low level of fungicide and salt solutions (calcium chloride or sodium bicarbonate @1–2%) and other food additives to improve efficacy against postharvest diseases. Hot air, curing and hot-water brushing reduce disease incidence and increase the efficacy of antagonists. EcoSMART formulation based on rosemary oil, viz. EcoTrolTM, SporanTM (fungicide) and eugenol oil formulation MataranTM (weedicides) are recognized as safe plant protectants. Bio control agents and botanicals may also reduce the amount of fungicide frequently used in postharvest disease management. Therefore, the postharvest application of eco-friendly control methods may be exploited to manage disease management of leguminous vegetables.
