Abstract

Elliptical plates are used in many structural systems. Depending upon the loading they often become suseptible to buckling. Buckling behavior of plates of various shapes has been studied in Ref.[1-4]. Buckling and postbuckling of rectangular and circular plates has been explored exhaustively in Ref.[5]. Linear buckling of elliptical plates has been investigated in Ref.[4,6]. Buckling and postbuekling of elliptical delaminations have been investigated in Ref.[7-8]. However, to the best of the authors' knowledge, hardly any work has been carried out on the postbuckling of elliptical plates under uniform edge compression. To bridge this gap, in the present paper, the postbuckling behaviour of elliptical plate is investigated, to predict their postbuckling strength, using a 8-node isoparametric plate finite element.
