Abstract
Brexit as a critical juncture in United Kingdom (UK) - European Union (EU) relations also has regional and global implications. Flagging historical allegiances and shared values, the UK government has drawn Australia into post-Brexit discussions around possible models and trading partners. The recent UK-Australia Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has been presented as a new trading opportunity under 'Global Britain' while, for the EU, Brexit offers to further the institutionalisation of recently improved EU-Australia relations. Australia's ideational affinity with the UK and the EU calling for a transparent, rules-based international order provides a platform to further develop their post-Brexit relations. However, shared values and norms do not necessarily translate into a convergence of interests and what Australia has to offer in the post-Brexit era needs to be addressed with caution. Any assessment must reference Australia's pragmatic diplomacy, the path dependence of the pre-Brexit multidimensional EU-UK relationship and possible Brexit-generated domestic uncertainties.
