Abstract

Abstract A sharp resistive transition at 50 K has been previously reported in the magnesium titanate spinel system [1]. This behaviour depends critically upon defect content and Ti oxidation state. Resistivity-temperature curves show complex behaviour with two transitions being observed on cooling. A second order transition from polaronic semiconductivity to a linear log resistivity dependence upon temperature is observed in all spinel samples with Ti oxidation state less than 3.27. The lower temperature, first order transition is only observed over a very narrow critical composition range. Critical current behaviour has been demonstrated in these samples at 15 K.
