Abstract

Reports have, periodically appeared suggesting cessation of the downward trend in the age at menarche (1, 5). Fluhmann (4, p. 54) postulated a early prototype which is delayed as a result of adverse circumstances. Brown (2) suggested two explanations for the observed decline in mean age: a general trend affecting all females, and a reduction in the proportion of those experiencing an unduly late menarche. If the age is reaching a lower limit and if there are fewer adverse circumstances czusing a delay in menarche, we may expect a relatively stable and healthy population to show a slight change in mean age and a reduced variance.
