Abstract

Two-level and three-level inverters are used in a conventional grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) system. These inverters are not suitable for high power applications. One of the adverse effects of these two-level and three-level inverters is that at the AC side it required a large size filter to get the good power quality and meet grid codes. Due to this, system becomes inefficient, unreliable, bulky, and costly. As the conventional grid-connected solar PV system is idle because of the absence of sun, the utilization factor of it is very low. As there are two-level and three-level inverters, this grid-connected PV system is having a number of disadvantages such as, (i) not appropriate for high power ratings, (ii) having large filter size, (iii) not able to exact maximum power, and (iv) utilization factor is low. In this paper, the review is to be carried out by keeping in mind to reduce all the drawbacks. How multilevel inverter can be more effectively used with its advantages is discussed in detail. With the help of the STATCOM controller, utilization feature of the system can be enhanced which is elaborated in this paper. It is also highlighted the use of PV inverter as a STATCOM called as a PV-STATCOM with its advantages.
