Abstract Energetic positrons stopping in gaseous matter annihilate from the positronium (e + + e-) state a large fraction of the time. It is shown that this positronium formation in combination with the finite energy resolution of real -ray detectors will yield a redshifted annihilation spectrum. The 476 24 keV feature observed from the direction of the galactic center region by Johnson, Harnden, and Haymes may be a positronium-annihilation spectrum.
