Abstract
The triad of the Situs inversus, Bronchiectasis and Sinusitis called as ‘Kartergener Syndrome’ was first reported by Siewert in 1904(1). Kartagener in 1933(2) illuminated its details, congenital nature and various associations. Elliason et al. in 1977(3) and Afzelius in 1981(4), after detailed electron microscopic studyexplained the cause of the immobility of sperm and cilia and the infertility. They noticed the structural similarity of the sperm-tail and the cilia and gave detailed account of various abnormalities causing “immotile cilia syndrome” (For eg- the usual absence of the dyneim arm of the outer microtubular doublet or filaments of the sperm tail and the cilia found in such cases and spoke defect in some).
