Abstract
Summary. This article presents a comparison of carbon dioxide emission during passengers and freight transporting by different transport modes. Because of significant diversity of transport means, the emissions expressed in grams per passenger kilometre or tonne kilometre were compared. Available data published in references were used to achieve this goal. The comparison revealed significant differences between transport modes as well as inside them, between transport means. High CO2 emission during aircrafts takeoff caused a necessity to take into account the flight distance for the air transport.

Summary
Funkcjonowanie współczesnego transportu jest związane ze znacznym zużyciem energii. Według danych zawartych w pracy [4] na terenie Unii Europejskiej w 2006 r. udział transportu w zużyciu energii był równy 31,5% i wyniósł 370 304 000 ton oleju ekwiwalentnego, czyli ok. 15,5 . 1018 J. Że transport jest źródłem 25-35% CO2 powstającego wskutek działalności człowieka na całej Ziemi [5]. Emisję dwutlenku węgla przez poszczególne gałęzie transportu na całej Ziemi w ostatnim stuleciu przedstawiono na rys. Skumulowana emisja dwutlenku węgla przez różne gałęzie transportu na całej Ziemi w latach 1900-2000 [9]. 1 wynika, że w minionym stuleciu największym źródłem dwutlenku węgla w transporcie była motoryzacja. Całkowita emisja zależy od wielu czynników i nie nadaje się do bezpośredniego porównania różnych rodzajów i środków transportu. Jaką emisję powoduje przetransportowanie jednego pasażera lub jednostki masy ładunku na określoną odległość różnymi środkami transportu. Jest to emisja przypadająca na jednostkę pracy przewozowej. W niniejszym artykule porównano więc emisję dwutlenku węgla przypadającą na jednostkę pracy przewozowej dla różnych rodzajów i środków transportu
