Abstract

The objective of this study is to analyze the quality of nursing care, considering a ten-year period of implementation of a department for nursing care quality control in a public university hospital. This study was performed using a qualitative-quantitative approach. Data collection followed a two-step process. In the first step, a literature search was performed regarding the theme “Quality of Nursing Care”, considering the period spanning 1998 to 2008 at the referred hospital. The second step consisted of analyzing the quality indicators of a hospitalization unit at the referred hospital in the period from 2000 to 2007. After implementing the quality control department, four studies on the referred theme were performed at the hospital. Moreover, there was a progressive improvement of the evaluated indicators, although the infrastructure remains a hindering factor in achieving quality. The challenge consists in changing the working process and the behavior of the workers. Descriptors: Nursing Audit. Nursing Records. Quality of Health Care.
