Abstract
In this article we seek comment on the main writers of novels of the nineteenth century in Portugal. Almeida Garrett, Alexandre Herculano and Camilo Castelo Branco each representing one of Romanticism narrative aspect, while Eca de Queiroz, realistic, presents us with a fourth possibility narrative. The historical, social and cultural features of Portugal are present in each of their novelists, however, with specific in their treatment of the same features.
