Abstract

The report of the BBC working party headed by Monica Sims on “The Portrayal of Violence in Television Programs” was published on March 21. The report contains suggestions for a revised note of guidance for BBC producers. (The last guidance was published in 1972.) At the launching of the report Alasdair Milne, Managing Director, BBC Television said, “I am glad the working party decided that the subject was far too complex to control through a simple list of ‘Thou Shalt not’ commandments. What is really required is that programs should continue to be made with a sense of care and responsibility.” The 56pp report looks at factual and fictional programs and programs for children and teenagers. Following is Appendix 2 which covers recent research on television and violence.
