Abstract

Although a review article on the uses of polyphosphoric acid in organic chemistry was written by us in 1958 (140), so much new material has appeared in the literature in the interim that there is now need for a supplemental article. It is the purpose of this supplement not only to summarize the completely new material, but also to include information which is now available in detailed form, even though that information had been published in the form of a brief communication previously. The information in this supplement will be presented in the same order of topics as found in the previous review article. Throughout this review, as in the previous one (140), the nomenclature of the original authors will be maintained with but minor changes in spelling on occasions. Since many of the references contain but one or two examples of the use of polyphosphoric acid buried in a relatively large amount of other material, this practice will help the reader to locate the specific examples in the original papers. Another review of the uses of polyphosphoric acid in organic chemistry, other than the one originally written by us (140), has been published recently (105). However, this article covers only a small fraction of the literature of the subject.
