Abstract

Polyphenols are secondary metabolites of plants and are generally involved in defense against biotic & abiotic stresses. Polyphenols are well-known health actives, which mainly acts as antioxidant. Recent studies strongly suggest that long term consumption of diets rich in plant polyphenols offer protection against development of various diseases e.g. cancers, diabetes, osteoporosis and neurodegenerative diseases etc. This article focuses on the present understanding of the biological effects of dietary polyphenols and their importance in human health and disease.
