Abstract

An important application of polymers is their use in composites, the filler being fibers or particles. Especially fibers are the reinforcing elements of a tough but weak polymer matrix.1) It is the goal of several rules or theories to predict the composite properties from those of the components. The important question arises whether or not bulk properties of polymers can be used in composite analysis. Several matrix properties are changed by the constraints of the surrounding fillers. Mixing rules and lamination theory are employed rather successfully, especially for calculating elastic and thermal properties. The calculation of several composite properties will be considered briefly in the following sections.
