Abstract
Editorial Essay: The crucial role that polymers play in the electronics industry is just one example of how modern life has been influenced by these multi purpose materials. Development of novel polymers with new and exciting properties and their effective application requires an interdisciplinary effort. This has guided the structuring of the research effort in West Germany. One result of this has been the founding of an Institute for Materials Science in Bayreuth.
