Abstract

A mechanism is proposed for forming an active centre in polymerization of styrene in the presence of fluorocarboxylic acids, which involves the ionization of acid by the of the monomer to form an ionic pair. The extent of charge separation in the ionic pair is determined by the concentration of acid taking part in solvation. The need is established for determining acid concentration (threshold) for the formation of an active centre stimulating styrene polymerization.
