Abstract
A poly ionic liquid, poly(3-(3-carboxypropyl)-1-vinyl-1H-imidazolium chloride) (P[CPVI]Cl), was synthesized and demonstrated to be effective as an inhibitor for carbon steel corrosion. The structure of P[CPVI]Cl contains a carboxylic acid group and N- heterocyclic ring, which serve as multiple adsorption sites and facilitate the formation of multi-anchored adsorption. The P[CPVI]Cl can be adsorbed onto the metal surface, resulting in a larger surface area coverage, leading to a higher inhibition efficiency of 88.27 %. The synergistic effect of P[CPVI]Cl and KI further enhanced inhibition efficiency up to 98.83 %. Various surface characterizations and molecular simulations have been performed, and a possible corrosion inhibitor mechanism has been proposed.
