Abstract

A polymer optical waveguide lens with large optical coupling tolerance has been developed. An extension in the tolerance for laser diode (LD) positional misalignment has been obtained by using segmented optical waveguides on the edge of the optical waveguide that can control the beam spot size of the propagated optical beam. The proposed structure is calculated based on an extension of about 40% with a 0.5 dB misalignment tolerance. The effect of the tolerance extension is also obtained when measuring the optical coupling characteristics of the prototype polymer optical waveguide, which is manufactured on the basis of simulation results.
