Abstract

This paper focuses on the multifunctionality of làmò derived from filler in language use in Longxi Qiang, a Tibeto-Burman language. The results show that filler, focus marker and discourse marker are distinctive functions of làmò with different syntactic and discourse features. From the perspective of ostensive-inferential communication, the linguistic item làmò may generate implicature. Collocations composed of làmò present the same polyfunctionality. This paper also examines the similarities between làmò in Longxi Qiang and the sentence-intermediate particle ne in Mandarin Chinese.
