Abstract
As the capability of communication has been accentuated recently, this thesis, appreciating the significance of discourse marker as communication elements, is to analyze the syntactic and pragmatic characteristics of discourse markers in Korean and Chinese. On the syntactic characteristics, discourse markers in both Korean and Chinese are expressed in various forms, with Korean focusing on word form and Chinese on phrase form. In addition, discourse markers in Korean and Chinese showed similar and different aspects at the same time in various mutation forms, free appearance position, and co-occurrence phenomenon with other discourse markers. On the pragmatic characteristics, discourse markers in both Korean and Chinese are classified as discourse progression function(beginning up a subject, connecting subjects, and closing a subject) and narrator attitude function(expressing an attitude). After reviewing the detailed function in the usage of discourse markers in Korean and Chinese, there were various discourse markers indicating the feature of calling attention and buying time in both Korean and Chinese. Especially, there are many of discourse markers expressing surprise and unexpectedness in Korean, and expressing the beginning up, reversing, and closing subjects in Chinese.
