Abstract

Coagulation factors were assayed in patients with cyanotic congenital heart disease. Moderately decreased levels of factors V and VIII, fibrinogen and platelets, prolonged prothrombin, partial thromboplastin, and serial thrombin times, and the presence of cryofibrinogen and fibrinogen degradation products were found in association with polycythemia. These findings are consistent with the diagnosis of low-grade chronic intravascular coagulation. Infants with cyanotic heart disease in whom polycythemia had not yet developed tended to have elevated levels of plasma clotting factors and platelets.
