Abstract
Polybenzimidazoles with benzimidazolyl side groups and containing hinge groups (-O-, -SO 2-, -CO-, -CH 2-) in one or both components, have been prepared by reacting bisbenzoylenebenzimidazoles with tetramines in polyphosphoric acid. The relationship between the chemical structure and physicochemical properties of the polymers was studied. It is shown that the introduction of benzimidazolyl substituents makes the polymers become amorphous and reduces their heat distortion temperature without having any appreciable effect on their resistance to thermal oxidation. The solubility of the polymers in ordinary organic solvents is increased to some extent.
